What we class as a dental emergency
If you're not sure whether something's urgent, our rule is simple: if it's worrying you, call us. In the meantime, here are the situations where you should definitely treat it as an emergency.
Before your visit
A few quick steps can make a real difference while you're waiting for your appointment.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. Rinse it gently in milk or saline if it's dirty - don't scrub it. If you can, place it carefully back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If not, store it in milk and get to us straight away. Time matters here.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salty water, take over-the-counter painkillers (ibuprofen tends to work well for dental pain), and avoid very hot or very cold food. Don't apply painkillers directly to the gum - it can cause burns.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any pieces if you can, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. We may be able to repair the tooth with composite, a same-day crown or a veneer depending on the damage.
Swelling or abscess
Don't ignore this - facial swelling, especially around the jaw or eye, can spread and become serious. Call us straight away. Apply a cold compress externally and avoid pressing on the area.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and try to keep the crown if you've still got it - we may be able to refit it. If the tooth is sensitive, sugar-free chewing gum can sometimes act as a temporary cover until you reach us.
Why same-day care matters so much
With most dental emergencies, time is the deciding factor between a small treatment and a much bigger one. A knocked-out tooth has a good chance of being saved if it's seen within an hour. A cracked tooth can often be restored before the crack reaches the nerve - meaning a filling or crown instead of a root canal or extraction. Even severe toothache, treated early, can prevent infection from spreading to surrounding teeth or bone.

Our priority is to get you out of pain, assess the cause, and stabilise the tooth. A full treatment plan can come later once you're comfortable.

Yes. We see emergency patients whether or not you're registered with us. Many of our long-term patients first came to us through an emergency appointment.
What if I can't afford emergency treatment right now?
We'll always discuss costs upfront, and we offer finance through V12 to help spread larger plans across 12 months interest-free, or longer at 9.9% APR. For complex treatment, we can also stage the work and the payments where clinically appropriate.
What do I do if my tooth has been knocked out?

Should I go to A&E for a dental emergency?

Can I have IV sedation in an emergency?
Yes, in some cases. IV sedation requires planning (you'll need someone to bring you and take you home, and you can't eat beforehand), but for nervous patients needing urgent complex care, we can usually accommodate it within a day.
What if my emergency happens out of hours?
Call us as soon as you can and we'll arrange the soonest possible appointment. For genuine out-of-hours emergencies in the UK, NHS 111 can also direct you to an urgent dental service.
